Anonymous California History Teacher

Ms. Ravitch,
I heard your speech at the NCSS conference today. I just want to tell you how much I appreciate your words and thoughts as well as your perseverance and fortitude.
I’m a middle school history teacher in California. I had teaching for over twenty years at a “persistently under-performing school” that had to undergo the “turnaround” model. Consequently, I was one of the half of the staff that had to be moved out of the school at the end of last year. The district decided to hire, as my replacement, a first year teacher who had previously been my student teacher. I’m sure he would be all right if there were some veteran teachers who could help him, but most of the teachers there are haven’t taught for more two years. So my former student teacher is floundering.
By coincidence, one of my students, in my new school this year, is a girl was at my old school last year. Knowing what had happened, one of the first things she said to me was that she was going to get me fired!
There’s really no words to show how much I appreciate what you’re doing.
