Hello Dr. Ravitch,

I simply wanted to commend you for speaking out in favor of teaching a broad curriculum and making it known the detrimental effects it has had on the quality of education we give out students. I am currently a Continuation high school science teacher  and as a result of extreme budget cuts we don’t have a budget for science experiments.  Since it is my responsibility to give my students a fair representation about what science really entails I find myself spending my income on basic supplies.  I wish that our government would take responsibility for providing a higher quality educational experience for our students.

Today I read your article on Finnish schools and their high achievement in PISA and I can only dream of the day where we can have a similar system in the U.S.  Many of our students have behavioral and/or drug-use problems and I believe that much of that would be alleviated by giving students more enriching educational opportunities as well as more arts and P.E. programs.

Do you think we will ever be able to have public education that mirrors that of Finland? Or do you think that we are destined to drag in achievement indefinitely?

Thank you for making public school needs public.
